Lose weight. Drink less wine. Become more organised. Change your work habits. Any of these sound like goals that you promised yourself last night? Make 2013 the year you make a New Year's Eve promise that you will actually stick to with a bit of forethought and good planning.
Jenesis Mind & Body Life Coaching life coach and personal trainer Jennifer Atkins said, first and foremost, she recommended her clients write down their goal.
"Statistics show people who write down their goals have an over 80 per cent higher success rate of achieving them," she said. "Make sure they are SMART goals - specific, measurable, achievable, results-oriented and time-limited."
Start a goals journal and break down a big goal into smaller, less intimidating steps, Ms Atkins said.
"Create a plan made of small, do-able steps to get you where you want to be, with a timeline," she said. Having a set date and a precise plan made a goal into a true resolution.
"Review your plan monthly. Get yourself a coach or find a friend to support you and keep you accountable."
Career Wisdom director and career coach Lois Keay-Smith said if it was a career goal or career change you were after in 2013, chatting to a career coach could help.
"You may find that while friends and family can be supportive and know you very well, they can also be too close and have firm opinions on what they believe you can and can't or should or shouldn't do," she said.
"An objective, experienced and professionally trained career coach who has your best interests at heart as a client is able to coach you to first look at what you have to offer, then identify and go after that dream job."
Ms Keay-Smith shared her top tips to achieve your career goals.
"Never stop learning. Find a mentor. Develop an enterprising mindset - whether you work as an employee or in your own business. If you are thinking of striking out in a new direction, look inwards first and work out what's important to you before assessing the myriad options out there."
