Has Perth finally rid itself of the "dullsville" tag?
Users of TripAdvisor, the world's biggest online travel site, certainly think so.
They have named Perth as the fourth top travel destination in the South Pacific region, behind only Sydney, Melbourne and Queenstown in New Zealand.
In TripAdvisor's 2011 Travellers' Choice Destination Awards, Perth also finished third in Australian destinations - ahead of Byron Bay (fourth), Cairns (fifth) and Surfers Paradise (sixth). Fremantle was 14th and Broome 15th.
Perth was "perched on the banks of the wide Swan River, between the Indian Ocean and the sands of the Nullarbor", TripAdvisor said.
"Perth is one of the world's most isolated cities, yet still boasts an active beach scene and smokin' nightlife," it said. "Family-friendly Cottesloe is brimming with swimmers, surfers and snorkellers.
"Head north to Scarborough for a spirited beachside club scene. Coo at cute marsupials on ferry-accessible Rottnest Island and don't miss the views from Kings Park."
Tourism WA's marketing executive director Laura Dawson said it was a great result given the survey was conducted with real travellers and based on real experiences.
