WA Labor politician Stephen Dawson and his partner Dennis Liddelow will make history tonight when they become the first same-sex couple to get married in Australia.
They will marry in front of Parliament House at one minute past midnight, 9.01pm Perth time, to be the first to take advantage of the ACT’s same-sex marriage laws.
Mr Dawson said he and his partner of 11 years had decided to make a public statement to encourage all Australian jurisdictions to recognise gay marriage.
But their marriage and those of dozens more gay couples marrying in the ACT this weekend could be short-lived – the High Court will rule on the constitutionality of the laws on Thursday.
"We know the High Court could negate our marriage next week, so we are doing it in full knowledge, but we’ve decided to be public about it because we do believe it’s about time in Australia that we had gay marriage," he said.
