A Perth Modern School student has been named WA's Young Historian of the Year.
Year 10 student Hayley McMillan was awarded the title in the National History Challenge for her essays on the Three Kingdoms period in Ancient China, focusing on the Battle of Red Cliffs.
It is the first time an ancient history submission has earned a student the coveted title.
Education Minister Peter Collier said this year's theme, Legends, Fact and History, received 275 entries including entries from regional areas.
"History has an important place in the National Curriculum and it was pleasing to see such a diverse range of entries including the ancient world, military battlefields, medieval England, 20th Century Australia and Nazi Germany," he said.
Hayley was one of 16 winners in the awards who will fly to Canberra for a presentation ceremony in Parliament House on November 26.
