Ana Guerrero believes the key to making good beer is to treat it like a woman.
"It's all about passion," she said. "You give her what she needs and treat her the way she is meant to be treated."
The microbiologist and former team leader for Swan Brewery is on the judging panel for this year's Perth Royal Beer Show.
"Every stage has to be treated with respect and it's not about what you like. It's about staying true to beer type," she said yesterday in the Wattle Room at Claremont Showground.
Over three days, 27 judges will swirl and taste a record 423 beers for the top spots in 22 categories including best lager, wheat beer, stout and draft.
Chief judge Sean Symons said many boutique breweries had opened in WA.
"I think what's impressive about WA is its acceptance of different beer styles," he said.
The hop-driven ales and the darker porter-style had proved popular with WA beer lovers.
The winners will be announced on Saturday.
