You know you're on the cusp of something big when you suddenly find yourself on the radar of Hollywood legend Clint Eastwood and in the inner sanctum of music's most famous family, the Jacksons.
Former Balcatta concreter turned Home and Away heart-throb Johnny Ruffo - whose career has been on the rise since finishing third on The X Factor in 2011 - looks set to emulate his music mentor and close friend Guy Sebastian by making waves of his own in the US.
Not only is the singer, dancer and actor looking to ink some deals following a recent series of successful meetings in Los Angeles, he also can boast writing sessions with the Jackson brothers and being sought out to audition for Eastwood's much-anticipated film adaptation of Broadway hit musical Jersey Boys.
"Michael Jackson has been my idol for my entire life, so to have this opportunity to meet and write with his brothers was absolutely incredible," the in-demand 25-year-old told AAA Weekend ahead of his appearance at the opening of Telethon tonight at 6.30pm on Seven/GWN7.
"I just couldn't stop smiling (laughs) but I had to try and refrain from looking a bit cheesy.
"With Jersey Boys, I got asked to do a role and, unfortunately, I had other commitments and contractual agreements.
"But just knowing there are people out there who are keeping an eye on you is amazing. Now that I'm in their sights, I'm going to keep pushing it and will get over to the US as often as I can to throw down some auditions and to record."
Due to his increasingly busy schedule - he recently performed in Hong Kong and at Macau's The Venetian - and insistence on perfecting the final product, Ruffo has pushed back the release of his debut album, which has been two years in the making.
"I could have had an album out 12 months ago but I don't want to rush it because you only get one shot at doing your first album," he said.
Ruffo will perform at noon tomorrow at Harbour Town's Trade for Telethon event, also featuring fellow Perth star Samantha Jade, her fellow X Factor winner Reece Mastin and Nathaniel Willemse.
As for the ongoing media attention on his love life - he is rumoured to be romantically involved with X Factor judge Dannii Minogue - Ruffo, without giving too much away, remains unperturbed.
"I think it's hilarious . . . I get a kick out of reading some of the things," he laughed, before confirming to AAA Weekend he was single.
"If you want to be in the spotlight, you have to deal with people writing things and all the speculation."
