Kalahaar ended the feature winning streak of Settle Strada when he swept past the David Harrison $2.30 favourite to claim his first big scalp in today's $100,000 Farnley Stakes (1400m) at Belmont Park.
Settle Strada jumped well for jockey Patrick Carbery from his inside draw (3), but he tended to over-race when sitting in fourth position behind the leaders Mega Steel ($51) and Galiletto ($$9) in the Listed event.
Carbery pushed Settle Strada to hit the front at the 150m mark, but he was quickly collared, by Kalahaar ($3.50), who powered home down the centre of the track to race away to an easy one length win.
Kalahaar finished the brides-maid to Settle Strada in the Bolton Sprint (1200m) and the Belmont Newmarket (1200m) at their previous two encounters under handicap conditions.
Kalahaar's trainer Steve Wolfe electing to bypass last Saturday week's Goodwood Sprint (1300m) where his five-year-old met Settle Strada at equal weights under the weight-for-age conditions.
Kalahaar (54kg) met Settle Strada with his biggest weight advantage today with a five kilo pull in weights.
Zester ($16) ran a good trial for the Kalgoorlie round finishing third (1 len) from his wide gate (8).
Hyperion Stakes winner Black Tycoon ($7) finished off strongly to claim fourth place (2 1/4 lens) at his first start since finishing fifth to Kincaple in the Group 3 Strickland Stakes (2000m) on June 29.
Trainer Justin Warwick had scratched Black Tycoon from last Sunday's Coolgardie Cup (1600m).
Kalahaar bred and owned by former Perth Racing vice-chairman Lex and Shirley Piper and Graham Daws, has proven a fabulous money-spinner winning at seven and placed six times from 17 starts, but today he finally broke his hoodoo in a feature race.
Wolfe will head to the Goldfields now to run Kalahaar in next Wednesday week's $130,000 tabtouch.com Hannan's Handicap (1400m).
"It wasn't so much the five kilos pull it was more the barrier and the ride," Wolfe said. "Shaun McGruddy rode him brilliantly.
"The horse has been screaming out for 1400m or even further.
"If ever a horse deserved to win a good race this bloke did.
"We been looking at the tail of Settle Strada so it is good to run past him.
"We'll head to Kalgoorlie now."
