Technology has taken its toll on yet another industry with the demise of the map shop.
Perth Map Centre closes this month, joining nearly three-quarters of Australia's map stores to have closed or gone online.
Fremantle's The Chart & Map Shop will soon be WA's only brick-and-mortar map store.
Those within the once thriving niche market put the closures down to a combination of tough retail conditions, online competition and the rise of technology.
Perth Map Centre manager Steven Randall said the decision to close and be online-only was triggered by the sale of the Hay Street building the business had rented.
The business has an online site, Mapworld, and Mr Randall will expand its work into a group focused on the resources industry, Business Maps Australia.
Dani Boichel, who runs The Chart & Map Shop with her brother Chris, said they had recently opened an online store.
Ms Boichel said it was "an awesome place" to work and attracted everyone from yachties to backpackers and "the older affluent market planning their trip down a French canal".
Mr Randall was also upbeat about the industry's future.
"We have a favourite saying," he said. "A GPS tells you where you're going, a map tells you where you are."
