Thieves drove a stolen bulldozer into an Albany shopping centre overnight then set it on fire.

Some time before 2am, a bulldozer was stolen from a building site in Lower King.

It was driven into the side of the new Bayonet Head Shopping Centre about 2am.

The thieves appeared to target an ATM between two vacant shops at the corner of Lower King Road and Bayonet Head Road.

The machine was not taken and the thieves did not get away with any cash.

A police spokesman said the ram raid destroyed the walls and windows either side of the ATM.

The bulldozer was then driven south to Mercer Road, where it was dumped in bushland and set alight.

Firefighters were called to Mercer Street to extinguish the blaze about 3.20am.

A Department of Fire and Emergency Services spokesman said the fire caused about $200,000 damage.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
