Sculpture on city watch

A 13-tonne, 3m bright blue head sculpted from concrete is the latest public artwork set to get tongues wagging across the City of Vincent.

Following on from the giant yellow "OMG" sign erected on Beaufort Street in December, Beseech was yesterday unveiled outside the council offices on the corner of Loftus and Vincent streets.

Perth sculptor Ken Sealey said the work sought to "humanise the building that it faces by challenging its scale and observing it".

"It's looking at the council and continually asking the question on behalf of the populace," he said.

Vincent mayor Alannah MacTiernan said the sculpture was in a prominent position to demonstrate the city's commitment to public art.

"It will uplift the spirit," she said.

The $35,000 sculpture is part of the council's Percent for Art Scheme, where owners of big developments must contribute one per cent of the project's value to public art.

They can also pay cash-in-lieu, as with Beseech, meaning the art is installed on council property.
