Perth Fashion Festival 2013 opened with some world class talent in the form of Jaime Lee's latest collection, and it closed in similar style, with a beautiful parade of Kym Ellery's latest resort collection, Vitreous, at the Linton & Kay Galleries in Perth.
Both designers are West Australian, albeit at rather different stages in their careers, and with completely different aesthetics.
Jaime Lee refers to herself as "the sparkle queen": she loves dramatic sequinned gowns with lots of detail, beading and embellishment, and she does this genre exceptionally well.
Kym Ellery is a different kettle of fish. Her aesthetic is pared back, streamlined and sporty, but with a sculptural, almost architectural edge.
There is little in the way of embellishment or fussiness: her shapes are simple, her colour palette quite minimal, but everything she does makes the girl who wears her clothes look inestimably cool.
From the original 60s Balenciaga shapes of her cocoon like tunic tops to the micro-shorts and crop tops, from the origami folds and karate influences, she has developed a signature style that is instantly recognisable.
Tonight the feel was quite opulent, insofar as models descended the staircase of this new-ish art gallery to a gold foil backdrop, and opening model Caitlin Lomax - a local girl who has gone on to an international career - sported a gold neckpiece sourced from WA's own Newmont Mines, signalling the designer's first foray into bespoke jewellery.
It was all very elegant, chic, and cool. I sat a few seats down from Kate Waterhouse, the Sydney fashion writer and socialite who is essentially Ellery's target customer: young, beautiful, chic and fashion-forward.
The audience, which included Ellery's parents as well as Waterhouse, pop star Samantha Jade, Sydney blogger and stylist Romy Frydman and Singaporean style-setter Marie Choo, appeared to be lapping it up.
It was nice to finish off the week with a show of quality and polish. For me, the three highlights of the week were this show, Jaime Lee's opening spectacle, and the fun and funky Student Runway show.
