If you had to use one word to describe the VIP opening event for the 15th Perth Fashion Festival, it would be "upbeat".
A 350-strong crowd packed into the foyer of the WA Museum, the centrepiece of which was a giant crystal "waterfall" chandelier that shimmered above the heads of the fashionably-dressed crowd.
It's no small achievement to keep a festival running for this long, in what is a notoriously fickle industry. The mood was celebratory as the cream of the local industry - and some high-profile interstate visitors - gathered together to witness a parade featuring six of the State's most talented designers.
Pop star Samantha Jade, cricketer Adam Gilchrist, models Samantha Harris and Scherri-Lee Biggs, Sydney fashion scribe Kate Waterhouse, tireless charity fundraiser Tonya McCusker, new minister of tourism Liza Harvey, Premier Colin Barnett and Lord Mayor Lisa Scaffidi were just a few of the names eagerly awaiting the night's crystal-themed parade.
What emerged during the 20-minute runway parade was a snapshot of just how diverse the local fashion industry is. From the subdued elegance and easy femininity of Morrison, Flannel and One Fell Swoop, to the arty romanticism of Empire Rose and the sex-appeal of Zhivago and industry stayer Ruth Tarvydas, there was a little something for everyone.
Tarvydas proved why she can still make jaws drop, sending out hourglass models in barely-there cut-out dresses and gold body paint.
Zhivago's skin-tight, body-conscious black dresses with plunging necklines were paired with crystal-embellished sun visors.
Morrison took a softer route with cream and pale blue prints on silk dresses, and One Fell Swoop's deceptively simple draped dresses were highlighted with shimmering threads.
Flannel showed their signature relaxed boho look with tiered skirts and a neutral palette, while Empire Rose concocted a romantic melange of prints, plaids, rose chokers, black lace and crystal-threaded necklaces. The crowd moved on to the pop-up Peroni Prive bar outside the museum after the event, kick-starting what is likely to be a busy week of fashion-admiring, people-watching and champagne-quaffing.
