Heard the one about the monkey in a sheepskin coat that escaped from its owner's car and went exploring an IKEA store in Toronto?
Amazingly, it's a true story from earlier this month and Adam Krandle, aka the Evil Hate Monkey from New York-based burlesque duo Trixie and Monkey, says it's also the best way to describe the spectacle of their Fringe World show.
Krandle was originally introduced to Trixie Little, aka Keri Burneston, by a old school friend and the pair have been performing their award-winning mix of burlesque, circus, comedy and animal handling for over a decade.
Burneston says their Perth show will be a "greatest hits" performance taken from their 10-year history that includes stints at The Box in New York and London and off-Broadway shows such as Mumbo (think Dumbo with a monkey instead of an elephant).
"Probably our most notable act is a piece we do to Bonnie Tyler's Total Eclipse of the Heart; it's the age-old tale of forbidden love between a women and a monkey," Krandle adds.
"It's a classic tale where you get to see some tail in the end."
As it turns out, playing the role of primate comes naturally.
"I already had the primate tendencies, I just had to put that into the performance," Krandle admits.
"I was already hairy and liked to climb trees and what not so it was really just a matter of finding the proper stage for it."
Finding the proper stage has never been easier, thanks to the recent explosion of neo-burlesque in New York and its wider acceptance as a legitimate art form.
"It's really booming," Burneston agrees.
"Every city and now practically every small town has its own burlesque troupe, or school. It's really surprising to have been doing it for so long yet still seeing it continue to grow; you wonder how much bigger it can get."
Many of the myriad styles of burlesque will be on display at Fringe World but you'll only see "spanking the monkey" at Trixie and Monkey.
Word is that it's this year's Freak and the Showgirl. You've been warned.Trixie and Monkey: Flipping and Stripping appear at De Parel Spiegeltent Feb 11-19.
