Miley Cyrus admits she was once scared to leave ex-fiance Liam Hemsworth.

The singer, 21, ended her engagement with the Australian actor in September.

Cyrus has now shed light on what went wrong in their relationship.

"I was so scared of ever being alone, and I think, conquering that fear, this year, was actually bigger than any other transition that I had, this entire year," she said during an interview with Barbara Walters for her ABC special Barbara Walters Presents: The 10 Most Fascinating People of 2013.

"I don't ever want to have to need someone again, where you feel like, without them, you can't be yourself," she said.

The former Disney star, who caused a stir at this year's MTV Video Music Award's by twerking against fellow singer Robin Thicke, said she did love Hemsworth, 23, but now that she's single she can "actually be happy".

Cyrus also hinted her young age was part of the reason the relationship failed.

"I don't think I realised what 19 truly is, and I got engaged at 19, and I definitely wouldn't change being engaged," she said.

"It was so fun wearing a fat rock for a few years. But now I wait for those moments of silence, when I'm just at my house, by myself."

Cyrus and Hemsworth began dating in 2009 after meeting on the set of the film The Last Song.

After announcing their engagement in June 2012, the couple called it quits officially three months ago.
