Cate in car crash

C *ate Blanchett *and *Rooney Mara *narrowly escaped unscathed after their car's brakes failed while they were filming upcoming lesbian-romance drama, Carol in Cincinnati, Ohio.

The duo were riding in a classic Dodge on the set of the Fifties flick when the vehicle began a dangerous slide down an icy road.

"Cate was driving and everything was fine until she tried to stop the car and the brakes failed," a production insider told the National Enquirer. "She kept pumping the pedal as fast as she could, but nothing happened. The girls started screaming at the top of their lungs, speeding past the film crew, who'd pulled to the side of the road after they'd finished shooting."

The actresses' terrifying ordeal only came to an end when Blanchett regained control of the car by spinning it around and slamming it into a fence. "Everyone came running. As the camera guy started dialling 911, he heard Cate yelling, 'We're OK! We're good! The car isn't good, but we're fine!'," the source said. Following the Australian icon's recent Oscar victory, she has been busy shooting the drama about a young woman, played by Rooney, who becomes obsessed with Blanchett's character Carol, an older divorcee.
