Festival daredevil in fall from stage tower

This is the horrifying moment when a reveller at Perth's biggest New Year's Eve festival fell from a lighting truss over the main stage as thousands watched.

The footage, which emerged online yesterday, shows the man dangling from the truss as Origin headliner US rapper ASAP Rocky pleads with him to climb down.

The man tried to get down but fell several metres, sparking cries from ASAP Rocky of , "Oh s..." and "He's OK though, right?"

Horizons Touring director Saran Bajaj, who organised the sold-out festival for 8000 patrons on the East Perth foreshore, said it was disappointing the man tried to slip past security officers.

He said they responded by clearing the space beneath him so nobody else was seriously hurt.

"We are really upset at the guy's behaviour," Mr Bajaj said.

"Slipping past security to go up there was really irresponsible and unfair on the crowd."

The man's injuries are serious but not life threatening.

Police said New Year's Eve was relatively quiet but marred by the death of a 23-year-old woman at a camp ground in Cathedral Avenue, Australind, from a suspected drug overdose and a suspected murder at Wedge Island.

Acting Commissioner Steve Brown said the woman's death was just one of 15 to 20 suspected WA overdoses that St John Ambulance crews were called to.

Mr Brown said there was no evidence that her death was linked to the other overdoses, all in the metropolitan area.

But there was clearly a bad batch of tablets being sold as ecstasy going around Perth.

"Illicit drugs put you at extreme risk of serious harm or death," Mr Brown said. "My message is your first experiment with drugs may be your last."

Usual hotspots Northbridge and Fremantle were quiet.

Mr Brown said the Origin festival was particularly well run.

Seven children were injured when the golf buggy they were in crashed into a tree on a private property in Yallingup. A 15-year-old boy was critically injured and flown to Royal Perth Hospital and children aged 11, 10 and 9 were taken to Busselton Hospital.

Police Minister Liza Harvey said Perth partygoers behaved relatively well.

"There have been some serious incidents but generally across the entertainment precincts we have seen very good behaviour," she said.
