TODAY, 7.30PM, SBS OneThe BBC does have some delightful fits of fantasy. What other organisation would challenge 11 of Britain's top makers of musical instruments to use junkyard scrap to equip an orchestra and then invite it to play the 1812 Overture at that annual shrine to entertaining music, the Proms? The instruments are amazing - an old vase, lampshade, copper pipe and a blender become a trombone. And though the end result may not be perfection, it is pretty darn good and earned a standing ovation for the brave members of the BBC Concert Orchestra and their conductor, Charles Hazlewood. For those who take their music more seriously, SBS1 will air the Vienna Philharmonic's traditional New Year's Day Concert at 9.15pm.
