He's provided the big-band sound on hit singles from the likes of Amy Winehouse, Adele, and his own band, the Business Intl., but now Mark Ronson is preparing to show off his DJ skills on his next Australian jaunt.
Inspired by such legendary hip-hop DJs as Premier, Funk Master Flex and Stretch Armstrong, Ronson is working on a show-stopping set for January dance fest Summadayze.
"It comes from my time as a DJ at hip-hop clubs in New York," he says. "It's very much put together like a hip-hop set with a lot of my new stuff, and remixes and edits. It takes me weeks to work out the set."
Ronson has been mingling with the best of late, teaming up with a few world-class athletes to provide the theme song to the London Olympics, Anywhere in the World.
"The objective was to go and record these five athletes and the sounds of their sports to make the track," he says. "I chose who I wanted to sing and I picked (English singer- songwriter) Katy B because I liked the record she put out and she really encapsulated the sound of young London."
It's not only young London that Ronson is focused on - he is also producing new music for Paul McCartney, and had recently joined some veterans on stage at the Montreux Jazz Festival.
"Nile Rodgers put together this big night and everyone loves his legacy and has so much respect for him that everyone he asked came," Ronson says. "He had the Smiths' Johnny Marr and I'd never met Johnny before and I asked Nile if he would consider playing Stop Me (If You Think You've Heard This One Before, by the Smiths) with us because it's pretty much my favourite song of all time, and then we did a cover of it, it was pretty wild."
Currently lending his polish to coming records from Katy B, Bruno Mars, Alicia Keys and UK rapper Giggs, Ronson says it will be a while before we hear the follow-up to the Business Intl.'s Record Collection album of 2010.
"I've just got to finish the things I'm working on now," he says. "I'm not really great at multi-tasking - I can't have three studios on the go doing my music and others. Some people are great at it and put out a lot of records, but for me, I have to focus on just one thing at a time."Mark Ronson will play at Summadayze, Patersons Stadium on January 6. Tickets from Ticketmaster.
