Actor Richard Gere is set to be honoured for his career achievements at this year's Zurich Film Festival in Switzerland.

The Pretty Woman star and outspoken campaigner for Tibetan rights will be handed the prestigious Golden Icon Award during a special gala on September 23.

"Richard Gere is an extraordinary man whose accomplishments in Hollywood are equaled by his humanitarian achievements," festival director Karl Spoerri said in a statement.

The actor's new film, Arbitrage, will also be screened at the event, which kicks off on September 20.
