Katy Perry says she purposely shows parts of her marriage breakup to Russell Brand in her forthcoming movie Part of Me 3D because she wants to encourage fans struggling with life-changing issues to walk tall.
The singer is promoting the fly-on-the-wall documentary, which was produced from more than 300 hours of film footage shot during her 2011 California Dreams world tour.
It includes footage of Perry trying to keep her marriage on track as she travels from country to country, with tender moments backstage before concerts when she appears to be overwhelmed with her personal problems.
The Wide Awake star admitted it wasn't easy watching the final edit, but Perry wanted to show her true self, with all of her issues and insecurities to create an honest film.
"Sometimes my tummy turned when I saw different scenes - whether I was upset, whether I looked completely awful and exhausted, bloated with zits, (the) whole bit," she told ET Online. "I left them in there 'cause I thought it was important to show the truth because there's a lot of fakeness out there these days."
Perry revealed just how much she struggled to keep performing during her marriage breakdown.
Her estranged husband announced the couple were separating towards the end of Perry's epic 124-date tour, with some reports claiming the 27-year-old was unaware Brand had decided to divorce her.
"There were times on the road where I literally had to throw myself on that (stage) lift and kind of flip a switch and separate the personal from the professional," she said.
"(The movie) is about overcoming obstacles no matter what shape they come in."
But she said there was a lot of drama surrounding her marriage she opted not to show. "I didn't get too detailed about the specifics because I believe that that's only supposed to be between the two people that are in it, but I just wanted to encourage people to let them know that it's OK if they have problems, they don't have to lay down and die."
