She's now a global pop phenomenon with a legion of dedicated fans who watch her every move.

But Katy Perry's long-time stylist and BFF Johnny Wujek says the hitmaker hasn't let fame go to her head.

"To be 100 per cent honest, the only thing that has changed about her is that the whole world knows who she is now," the celebrity dresser and designer reveals to Access All Areas.

"She is still the same girl I met 12 years ago. She is easy-going, free-spirited and loyal. She is a real girl who is genuine and beyond talented."

The duo hit it off at a party long before Perry rose to prominence and Wujek went on to become the creative force behind some of the pop star's most iconic outfits, from the peppermint spinning bra she donned for her California Girls tour to the light-up gown she wore on the red carpet for the Costume Institute Gala ball in 2010.

Last week the Los Angeles native went straight from hanging out with his bestie at Coachella to boarding a plane for Australia, where he is promoting Colgate toothpaste and what has been dubbed "The BFF Effect" - the belief that every girl needs a close male friend to give them honest advice when it comes to fashion.

Wujek believes his own friendship with Perry has thrived because he is never afraid to tell her how he sees it.

"That's what we do best with each other, being best friends," he explains.

"We have enough history to know that we only have each other's best interests at heart. When we are telling the truth we mean it - we are only looking out for each other. And she does it to me all the time."

While he has racked up plenty of other celebrity clients, including Kim Kardashian, Rachel Bilson and Nicki Minaj, Perry remains Wujek's favourite to dress because of her ability to rock even the craziest of get-ups.

He says having confidence and courage is the key advice he would pass on to other women needing a style boost.

"You can wear something that is silly and outrageous but if you own it, you can convince anybody that it's amazing," Wujek says.

"Fashion is about having fun, being adventurous and taking risks.

"I am never one to blend in; I am always about standing out and starting conversations through fashion."

Wujek will next head back to LA, where he is on a tight schedule to finish off the costumes for Perry's Prismatic world tour before rehearsals begin next week. He says the outfits for the tour, which hits Perth in November, would be "bigger and better than ever before".
