The WA Youth Jazz Orchestra has taken the art of busking to a new level after hitting the Perth central business district with The Cat Empire's trumpet player Ross Irwin yesterday.

The musicians garnered applause from the many members of the public who stopped to hear them at Central Park.

WA is no stranger to famous buskers with John Butler, of the John Butler Trio, famously beginning his career performing on the streets of Fremantle.

WAYJO general manager Callum Moncrieff said performing for passersby in the city was an ideal opportunity for the orchestra to promote its Winter Nites concert on Friday at the Perth Concert Hall.

"Jazz isn't a scary style of music," he said. "It is really accessible. We just wanted to get out here and bring it to the people."

Irwin, who claimed not to have busked since he was 12, said it was important to enjoy the serious and the fun aspects of music.

The orchestra will perform with singer Kristin Berardi, saxophonist David Theak and Irwin to play new works made together and some favourite jazz staples.
