Simply Red's swan song

With Australia becoming a safe haven for gingers everywhere, Simply Red are heading back to play Sandalford Estate in the Swan Valley on October 23 as part of their farewell tour of Australia.

Led by red-haired singer Mick Hucknall, the Manchester blue-eyed soul and pop outfit performed at Kings Park last year and at Leeuwin Estate in 2007 - the same year their frontman announced that the band were going to call it quits. The coming tour, promoter Michael Coppel says, will definitely draw a line under the band's 25-year career.

After scoring an international hit with their 1985 debut single Money's Too Tight (To Mention), Simply Red remained mainstays of the charts, especially in the UK where all 10 of their studio albums made the Top 10. In Australia, they enjoyed three Top 10 albums, peaking at No. 2 with 1989's A New Flame. Simply Red's biggest hit here was the ballad If You Don't Know Me By Now, penned by Philadelphia soul duo Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff.

Simply Red will be joined by Australian soul diva Marcia Hines at the Sandalford concert. Tickets go on sale on July 12 from Ticketek outlets.
