Troubled pop diva Whitney Houston will perform two concerts in Perth next year as part of her first Australian visit since 1988.

Yesterday, organisers unveiled her opening date at a Hunter Valley winery on February 27, and will confirm the rest of her Australian tour later this month.

But The West Australian understands that Houston, 46, will perform two shows at ME Bank Stadium next March with promoters expecting 12,000 fans to attend each concert.

The performances are likely to be "in the round", the same configuration as Fleetwood Mac's two performances at ME Bank Stadium next month.

One of the best-selling female artists in music history, Houston is on the comeback trail after drug addiction and her difficult marriage to singer Bobby Brown, which ended two years ago, threatened to completely derail her career.

Earlier this year she released her first album in seven years, I Look to You, which topped the US Billboard charts and climbing to No. 16 on the ARIA album charts.

Houston has won six Grammy awards for R&B-flavoured pop hits such as The Greatest Love of All, I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me), Saving All My Love for You and her megahit from the soundtrack to the 1992 film The Bodyguard, I Will Always Love You.

The New Jersey-born mezzo-soprano will kick off her world tour in Russia next month and play shows in Japan next February before heading Down Under.

An extensive European tour follows her Australian shows.
