It is not every day you are invited to watch an ARIA award-winning musician rehearse, let alone brush up with a full orchestra.

That is what a group of lucky high school and music students were treated to yesterday as part of the WA Symphony Orchestra's education program.

Ben Lee, the singer-songwriter behind hits Gamble Everything for Love and Catch My Disease, was rehearsing for his second collaborative performance with WASO with three shows to finish on Saturday night at the Perth Concert Hall.

"In summer 2008, Ben did two concerts with us at Kings Park and it was one of the best things we have ever done. It was so successful," WASO head of artistic planning Marshall McGuire said.

WASO has worked with many popular musicians including Ben Folds, Augie March, Human Nature, Tex Perkins and Tim Rogers and prides itself on an education program to make music accessible through tours, special performances and behind-the-scenes events.

"It is quite exciting because you are getting a little private glimpse backstage of what goes on, a bit like a training session with a football club," Mr McGuire said.

"The important thing about it is to let young people see the work that goes on to get a performance ready, to see the nuts and bolts of it."
