Kidman broke rib for Moulin Rouge

Desperate to get her tiny waist even smaller, Nicole Kidman revealed she actually broke a rib for Moulin Rouge! trying to get into a corset.

The Australian, who played the courtesan Satine in Baz Luhrmann's 2001 flick, has explained the painful lengths she went to for the part.

"I hurt myself dancing in heels at three in the morning and I fell downstairs," Kidman said on The Graham Norton Show.

"I then re-broke my rib getting into a corset.

"I had this thing that I wanted to get my waist down to 18 inches, which Vivien Leigh had on Gone with the Wind, and I was just like, 'tighter, tighter!'"

It wasn't the only tough part about Moulin Rouge! for Kidman, who says singing tunes like Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend wasn't easy.

"Moulin Rouge was really hard for me because singing is not something that comes naturally to me. It is so frightening to have to sing in front of people. I get terrified," she says.

Kidman was speaking to Graham Norton about her new movie Paddington, in which she plays the villainous Millicent.

She actually learnt how to throw knives for the flick, although she says those shots ended on the cutting-room floor because they were too frightening for a kids film.

Speaking of knife skills, Kidman also denied a long-running rumour that she had learnt how to castrate cattle while preparing for her role in Luhrmann's Australia.

"I didn't learn to castrate bulls for Australia, that's not true. I've never castrated anything," she told Norton.
