World looms for WA indie star

She has the kind of classic girl-next-door looks that would make her an ideal candidate for a Hollywood romantic comedy.

Despite her beauty, budding WA actress Alyson Walker's passion lies with niche independent films rather than big-budget blockbusters.

Since moving to Sydney two years ago, the 27-year-old has been steadily building traction in the indie scene with roles in several Australian projects, including TV movie The Great Mint Swindle and feature film The Precipice.

The latter, however, has now projected her on to the world stage after she was nominated for best supporting actress at the upcoming Madrid International Film Festival - something the rising star would never have predicted.

"I do a lot of indie films because there is a lot more substance to them," Walker told _Access All Areas _ while on a trip home to visit family.

"People that create these indie projects are really passionate. You want to work with other creative minds and be on that same level.

"(But) you never know what is going to happen to them - some of them fly and some of them get swallowed up."

Walker is now gearing up for the release of her next movie, The Burning Kiss, and will head to the US next week to meet a prominent talent scout, with a view to moving to the States later this year.

The South Perth-raised performer, who began drama classes at 14 to build up her self-confidence, said forging a career as an actor was not easy but she had learnt to roll with the punches and take any knockbacks in her stride.

"It takes a lot of hard work and commitment and there are constant rejections," Walker admitted.

"But when you get through the door and you book a great job, the rewards are amazing. I love it; I just couldn't imagine doing anything else. The fact that it is hard makes it even more worthwhile."

And rather than chasing fame and fortune, Walker's ultimate dream is simply to be a working actor for the long haul.

"It is a goal of mine to be able to get up every day and be able to do what I love," she smiled.
