Ripper Street

SUNDAY, 8.30PM, TEN

You might be forgiven for wondering why yet another version of the nefarious life and times of Jack the Ripper needed to be made.

In fact, this is post-Jack, six months after the last of his killings, when the inhabitants of Whitechapel are hoping they've seen the last of his deeds.

But then another female body is found, bearing all the Ripper signatures. Is there another killer at large, or is Jack back?

The investigation is led by the curmudgeonly Chief Insp. Abberline (Clive Russell) and Edmund Reid (Matthew Macfadyen), with Game of Thrones' Jerome Flynn playing brawling cop Bennett Drake.

It is as much an excellent whodunit highlighting the emerging skills of scientific investigation as it is a fine portrayal of the grimness of Victorian London, complete with violence, pornography and general misery.
