Former Perth boy Tim Minchin has won best supporting actor in a musical for his role in Jesus Christ Superstar at a UK theatre awards show.

Minchin, who last year nabbed newcomer of the year at the same awards for penning Matilda The Musical, took home the prize for his role as Judas Iscariot at the Whatsonstage Awards, which were held at the West End's historic Palace Theatre on Sunday night.

Meanwhile, his co-star Melanie C won best supporting actress in a musical for her role of Mary Magdalene in the Andrew Lloyd Webber/Tim Rice arena production.

The big winner for the night was West End hit Sweeney Todd, which carried off five prizes.

The production was named best musical revival while its stars Michael Ball and Imelda Staunton were declared the best actor and actress respectively in a musical.

Rupert Everett landed the prize for best actor in a play for his performance in The Judas Kiss.
