Young James Herriot
TOMORROW, 8.20PM, ABC1
This three-part series has been a surprise because it is so different to the much-loved original James Herriot series, All Creatures Great and Small.
That James Herriot (the pseudonym of vet Alf Wight) was a cheery chap who took to life on the Yorkshire Dales with a smile.
This prequel covers Herriot's training in Glasgow and there is little to laugh about as he struggles with exams, his relationship with the well-bred Jenny and housemate Whirly's run-in with the pompous Professor Gunnell. But this is the 1930s and there are more ominous problems on the horizon, brought to light when James discovers Jenny's mother is a believer in animal eugenics.
