Some MasterChef viewers will be breathing a sigh of relief today after highly emotional Victorian contestant Debra Sederlan became the first cook ousted from the coveted top 10 last night.
According to Sederlan - who was once a vegetarian - being left to do the spit roasted pig only added to the emotion and intensity of the elimination cook-off. "I was completely unfamiliar and very confronted by it, so I knew I was going to struggle," she told AAA. "At that point, we were all so exhausted and to be honest I just thought, 'I've had enough.' I've had enough of all the strategies, I've had enough of all the game playing - I'm tired."
In the past few weeks, the 50-year-old had garnered a reputation for not working in harmony with her fellow contestants during the team challenges. In last week's elimination episode, which saw fan favourite Amina Elshafei leave the show, Sederlan said being a "middle-aged woman going through menopause" had fuelled her emotional instability during the pop-up restaurant team challenge.
While her comments seemed to amuse the judges, it attracted more criticism from fans, many of whom took to Twitter to vent their anger. Despite the viewer backlash, Sederlan defends how she reacted on the night.
"It was meant to be tongue in cheek," she said. "What I was trying to say was, as well as what everyone else was dealing with I was also dealing with something that was going on inside (me) and the point of anxiety that I was functioning at was extreme, but no one knew that, they just saw me crying.
"It was interesting to hear what people had said and it was also interesting to see how it was edited, because I was portrayed as quite a belligerent person but it wasn't the case at all."I really didn't take it personally at all. I know who I am as a person, I know how my friends feel about me and how my family feel about me and that's the most important thing for me."
