A work of art painted by comedian Ricky Gervais failed to sell at a charity auction in Inverness, Scotland.

The Office star donated the canvas which depicts the New York skyline backed by a flame red sky.

Gervais was among a number of artists who handed over works in a bid to raise money for Maggie's Caring Cancer Centres, but the funnyman's piece failed to attract a single bid when it went under the hammer on Saturday.

Jane Owen, owner of the Inchmore Gallery in Inverness, where the sale was held, writes in a post on the event's Facebook.com page: "Well 5pm has been and gone and unfortunately the Ricky Gervais painting didn't sell, however, hopefully it will go off to another auction, elsewhere, and raise oodles of cash!"
