There will be excited scenes at the Perth Writers' Festival Family Day this Sunday as people jostle for a signature from among more than 60 talented young WA writers at the 2012 Born Storytellers' book launch.

For the past year, students from WA schools have been busily writing and refining their work for publication.

The event is part of a creative writing program for schools conducted by professional writer Kevin Price. Born Storytellers began in late 2004 when a classroom teacher from Riverlands Montessori School in West Swan asked Price to provide a creative writing program for students in her upper primary class.

Price designed a program based on one question: "What 10 things didn't I know at the beginning of my writing career that, had I known then, would have helped me the most as a young writer?"

The result is a program that takes young writers on a journey through the process of creating a story through to publication. "The students need a tangible outcome," Price says. "Their work is published and celebrated in a book-launch event."

Last year it was decided to publish the stories in six different anthologies according to genre, ranging from adventure to teen fiction and romance.

The 66 authors come from Murdoch College, Penrhos College, Riverlands Montessori School, Beechboro Christian College, Cornerstone Christian College and Margaret River Independent School, and range in age from nine to 18.

English teachers have praised the program and the books, saying reluctant readers seemed eager to read stories written by their peers.

"These students also become more critical readers," Price said.

Author Nick Hendrie will launch the Born Storytellers series in the Murdoch Lecture Theatre at UWA on Sunday February 26 at 11am. For more information visit bornstorytellers.net.
