Russell Crowe and his wife Danielle Spencer have been living in separate homes for more than a year, according to reports.
News of the couple's split after nine years of marriage broke on Monday and now reports suggest Crowe, 48, and Spencer, 43, have been estranged since late last year.
Neither has publicly confirmed the separation.
According to News Ltd, Crowe has continued to stay at the couple's Woolloomooloo penthouse during his time in Sydney.
Meanwhile, Spencer and the couple's two sons, Charlie and Tennyson, have been living at the $10 million Rose Bay house they bought only last year.
Spencer's neighbours have told The Daily Telegraph that the Rose Bay house has never been home to the family of four.
"(There were) no signs a man had even lived there," the neighbour is quoted as saying.
The Oscar-winning actor has spent most of 2012 working overseas. He's currently in the US filming the biblical epic Noah.
Fairfax reports it was Spencer's decision to separate.
Friends of the singer/songwriter have told the Sydney Morning Herald that Spencer is "handling things well" and that the separation had been coming for some time.
As rumours about the circumstances surrounding the separation filter in, there is inevitable speculation of how much money Spencer will pocket from the likely divorce. It's widely reported Spencer signed a pre-nup worth about $20 million when the couple married in 2003.
