The head of Australia's biggest construction union has slammed BGC after its third workplace death in Perth in less than a year.
Michael Clarke, 44, of Secret Harbour, died on Wednesday after a suspected fall at BGC Precast in Naval Base. It was the third death at a Perth BGC facility in 11 months and the second at the Naval Base plant.
In April, a man died at a BGC worksite in Hazelmere and in October last year, a 27-year-old Mandurah man was buried alive by sand at the Naval Base plant. CFMEU national president Joe McDonald said BGC needed to start putting safety above profit.
"Their safety procedures are a non-event," he said. "Where were the supervisors, where were the so-called safety officers?
"It's all about profit. The workers haven't got a voice."
He called on BGC to open its doors to the union.
"(BGC) spends an absolute fortune keeping union officials away," he said.BGC said the company was assisting WorkSafe with its investigation.
