Sirius Resources chief executive Mark Bennett was named Prospector of the Year at the Association of Mining & Exploration Companies awards last night for discovering the celebrated Nova and Bollinger deposits near Balladonia.
AMEC said the discovery was the most significant in Australia for many years and was probably the best nickel find since Voiseys Bay in Canada about 20 years ago.
"The Nova and Bollinger discoveries have redefined the prospectively and geology of WA and destroyed the myth that Australia is a mature over-explored area that does not have the potential for major new discoveries," AMEC said.
Professor Odwyn Jones and the late Kenneth Talbot were inducted into the Australian Prospectors and Miners' Hall of Fame.
Professor Jones was inducted in to the category of Educators for his commitment to education, research and international trade with the WA School of Mines.
Mr Talbot was inducted in to the category of Entrepreneurs and Promoters for his business leadership in mining spanning over 30 years.
Junior WestBusiness resources reporter Nick Sas won the Joe Keeling media award for a series of articles including "Nuclear pull is debatable" and "Hopes rest on heavily discounted raising".
Jarrod Lucas, of the Kalgoorlie Miner, received an honourable mention in the Print Journalism (Newspaper) Award for his article "Mining boss laments loss of productivity and 'Celebration of Mining' special edition.The AMEC Awards Dinner was held last night at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre, wrapping up AMEC's annual two-day convention.
