Organic Manjimup apples have hit the shelves as supermarket giants Coles and Woolworths take advantage of the organic food trend.
Newton Orchards of Manjimup are the first WA producer to supply organic apples to the retail rivals this season — a move seven years in the making.
Among the biggest organic growers in Australia, Newton supplies favourites royal gala, fuji, jazz, granny smith and pink lady.
The apples are available at Woolworths under the Macro Organics label and will be sold as Valley-View Organics apples at Coles.
ValleyView Organics is the organic arm of Newton Orchards.
“Conversion began in 2008 and 2013 is our first certified crop, so it has taken a few years longer than expected and has not been easy,” owner Harvey Giblett said.
He said Newton Orchards had recognised a growing consumer demand for safe food before acting to establish a supply.
“As an 80-plus-year-old family business now seeing the fourth generation grow up on the farm, we have a commitment to improving our high standards,” Mr Giblett said.ValleyView Organics will be launched at Manjimup Farmers Market on Saturday.
