Finance Minister Penny Wong will admit today that parts of WA are struggling in the face of the strong Australian dollar despite the State's outward appearance of strength.
But Senator Wong, in Perth today to address _The West Australian _Events Program, will also argue Australia is one of the world's few countries with the financial capacity to shape its future through the coming year.
In her speech she says the strong dollar had defied economic orthodoxy by failing to follow the recent fall in commodity prices, in part because of Australia's overall financial strength. Senator Wong will argue the impact of the strong dollar is being felt in many parts of the nation's economy, including in WA.
"We know that there are sections of the WA economy that are struggling, sectors that are experiencing the impact of the high dollar or structural change," she will say.
"So while the WA outlook is positive in aggregate terms, the on-the-ground experiences are mixed.""Managing the national impacts of these global forces requires an economic plan that leverages our strengths and invests in the drivers of growth."
