The transformation of the Koombana North precinct started last week as workers moved on-site to get the first stage of the much-hyped Bunbury Waterfront Project under way.
The multi-million dollar project will redevelop State-owned land for commercial and residential uses.
The start of the earthworks, landscaping and construction of a seawall was celebrated at Thursday’s “ground-breaking ceremony”.
As part of the work, the foreshore and ski beach areas will be revamped with better pedestrian and cycling paths, grassed areas with barbecues and picnic tables and viewing areas overlooking Koombana Bay.
Bunbury MLA John Castrilli said the start of the “forward works’’ and the ceremony was significant for multiple reasons.
“This project is the result of a collaborative effort between the State Government, its agencies and departments, local authorities, the private sector and, most importantly, the community,” he said.
“We listened hard to what people had to say about earlier proposals and, as a local member and chair of the Bunbury Waterfront Taskforce, I took up the cause to find new ways forward and bring to fruition this vitally important revitalisation of the city’s waterfront.”
Bunbury Mayor David Smith welcomed the start of the work and said it had been his great desire since his time as State Minister for the South West to see the area developed.
Mr Smith joked about the growing number of wild rabbits living on Koombana Drive, saying LandCorp could undertake their eradication.
The State Government announced $23.8 million would go to Stage 1 of the Waterfront Project, which includes Koombana North and Marlston North.City of Bunbury landscape architect Myles Bovell overlooks the make-over of St Paul’s Square in the CBD.
