Workers at Coles’ Margaret River store have complained about the repetitive in-house advertising and fear their conditions will worsen as the national retailer ramps up competition to take on the new Woolworths set to open in town after Easter.
Bursts of the successful Down Down song were singled out by workers who asked not be named, but said they had complained to upper management.
The complaints include grumbles about recent changes to the store, such as workers’ loss of brand identity after uniform changes as well as perceived occupational health and safety risks from the recent delicatessen fit-out.
Inquiries to Coles were directed to national media director Jim Cooper, who confirmed there were complaints, but declined to say how many.
“We’ve had very few complaints – in fact we regularly have customers singing along with the song in the store when its playing,” Mr Cooper said.
“The promotional program at Coles Margaret River, including new uniforms and in-store music, is the same as those being run in all our stores across the country,” he said.
The song and various store features were “instantly recognisable symbols,” Mr Cooper told the Times.
A further 15 workers had been hired since the recent fit-out.
“The renewal of our Margaret River Coles store is also part of a national program to upgrade our stores and give customers a better shopping experience,” he said.“The existing structure within the deli meant that the newly installed counter sits higher than we would prefer, and we are currently looking at options to improve this.”
