The latest census figures released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics show that one in four people in Perth live alone.
Hans Schutte, principal of WA Property Project Marketing, says the trend is one of the factors driving demand for one-bedroom apartments.
"In Subiaco, for example, the ABS figures show that 37.6 per cent of residents or more than one-third of people living in the area lived alone during 2011 when the census was taken. This compares to 35 per cent of residents who lived alone during 2006 when the last census was completed," Mr Schutte said.
"This high number of people living alone is resulting in a strong demand for apartments in near-city suburbs such as Subiaco with the census showing that 32.7 per cent of homes are now apartments or units compared to around 9.1 per cent for the rest of Perth.
"In particular, the high number of singles is resulting in strong demand for one-bedroom apartments."
WA Property Project Marketing is marketing QUBE Property Group's Centro North East development, under construction, where six of the nine one-bedroom apartments have sold.
"We're finding that most of the one-bedroom apartments being purchased at Centro North East are (bought) by young professionals who want to live near their place of work in the city," Mr Schutte said.
"At the same time they want to reside within easy access to the cafes, restaurants and social attractions of Subiaco."For example, one-bedroom, one-bathroom apartments at Centro North East have a minimum internal living area of 64sqm."
