The name Minproc is set to disappear after more than 30 years in WA in favour of the mining engineering company's international parent AMEC.

Known as AMEC Minproc since being acquired by the British contractor two years ago, the Perth-based operation will this month take on the moniker of its sister companies overseas - AMEC Mining and Metals.

"We always agreed the Minproc name had good brand recognition and rather than dropping it immediately, it was worthwhile taking it forward for a couple of years and getting an association between Minproc and AMEC," company president Malcolm Brown said.

Minproc was established in 1978, first specialising in gold mining and expanding into other commodities in Australia and overseas.

In 2000, it became a subsidiary of listed Australian company GRD. AMEC acquired Minproc when it took over the loss-making GRD in November 2009. The company is one of four AMEC has bought in the past two years as part of a rapid expansion in Australia.

AMEC growth regions president Tony Cruddas said rather than losing Minproc's heritage, the rebranding would build on its reputation and experience.

"We don't see Perth just as an Australian play but as a centre of excellence for mineral processing throughout our growth regions," Mr Cruddas said.

That now includes central Asia, where the Minproc business is undertaking four feasibility studies for copper and zinc projects in Kazakhstan for UK-listed miner Kazakhmys.

Mr Brown said there were plans to set up an operating office in Kazakhstan within 12 months.

"We see it as a substantive growth area for us in a region that's quite used to international engineering companies doing work in that part," he said.
