Wobbly wonder turns 85

In 1927, a Sydney tram driver made jelly crystals in his bath tub and sold them on his tram route.

Bert Appleroth's jelly became so popular that he eventually left his job to start a business in Paddington making Aeroplane Jelly.

He never looked back.

Today, the iconic Aussie brand turned 85, and it remains a familiar fixture on supermarket shelves around the country.

Aeroplane Jelly spawned the catchy "I like Aeroplane Jelly" jingle in 1938, which the makers claim was an unofficial password for Australian soldiers during the Vietnam War.

The jingle was added to the National Film and Sound Archive as part of its Sounds of Australia collection in 2008.
