News boss rails against regulation

Regulatory intervention by the Australian government in print media would be an "act of sabotage," News Ltd chief executive Kim Williams said.

"I look at it in very, very stark and severe terms," Kim said in an interview with Australia's Sky News.

The recommendation from Australia's media inquiry that a new body to set journalistic standards should be created is "deserving of no consideration," he said.

The recommendations from former Federal Court Judge Ray Finkelstein, who led the inquiry, are "remarkably superficial, at times quite trivial," Williams said.

In the future, print news will be part of a wide array of media products that include smart devices that offer access to video and digital services and online offerings, Williams said.

"All of these things are part of a new kind of economic landscape," he said.
