A 38-year-old Aboriginal man was found dead in his cell at Hakea Prison this morning.
The Department of Corrective Services advised this afternoon that the remand prisoner was found hanging in his cell at about 5am and attempts by staff to resuscitate him were not successful.
Police will be investigating the death and, as will all deaths in custody, a coronial inquiry will be held to determine the cause of death and circumstances, the Department said.
The man’s family has been notified.
“A range of support and counselling services are available at the prison for staff and prisoners, including the Aboriginal Visitors Scheme, prison support officer, peer support and chaplaincy services,” the Department said.
