Local Bojana Bubosic has come out of retirement to fill in for injured Italian Flavia Pennetta at the Hyundai Hopman Cup at Perth Arena this afternoon.
Pennetta pulled out of her singles match against Eugenie Bouchard in just the fifth game with a right wrist injury, handing the tie to Canada.
World No.11 Milos Raonic then made short work of Andreas Seppi in his 6-2 6-4 win to give Canada the clean sweep they required to stay in the hunt for Saturday’s final.
Jelena Dokic is in Perth as the injury back-up but hurt her back this week and was unable to take her place in the exhibition mixed doubles.
Bubosic was then called up to partner Seppi in the match.
The 26-year-old made her grand slam debut at the Australian Open last year but retired in July after a succession of injuries took their toll.
Bubosic appeared nervous early in the match and was comfortable broken in her first service game as the Canadian pair romped in the first set 6-1.
But she produced some moments to remember during a closer second set, which Canada eventually secured 6-4.
The Polish must now win at least one of their matches against Australia tonight to secure their place in Saturday’s final.
