The bomb squad was called this morning to deal with gas bottles fashioned into a crude explosive device in a bid to blow up a Rockingham ATM.
A cleaner reported that an explosive device was near the ANZ teller machine at Anchorage Village shopping centre around 5am.
The arson squad and the TRG bomb squad were called to dismantle the crude-looking bomb and make the scene safe.
A witness said he saw a bomb squad officer remove two gas cylinders from near the ATM and pull out a length of hose from the ATM.
A police spokeswoman said it was not believed that any damage was caused to the machine.
An exclusion zone has been established surrounding the scene and Belgravia Terrace is closed to the north and south of the shopping precinct.
Members of the public are advised to avoid the area where possible.
Roads north and south of the Belgravia Terrace shopping precinct has been shut and people are encouraged to avoid the area while officers are at the location.
Anyone who saw anything suspicious or can provide further information is asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
