Kim Basinger has talked about how she overcame her drug dependence, saying she hit a point where she "didn't want to live on drugs" any more.
The 60-year-old actress told People magazine about the time in her life when she needed medication to help her get through the day and deal with anxiety.
But she said she was now free from drugs and appreciated life much more than she once did.
"Now I wake up and enjoy life," she said. "I didn't want to live on drugs. I wanted to face everything I was afraid of."
Basinger credited her career, both the good times and the bad, with making her the person she was today.
When her marriage to Alec Baldwin ended in divorce in 2002, their daughter Ireland Baldwin, 18, became the subject of a bitter custody battle.
Basinger said she and Ireland were close, adding that the career the 18-year-old has carved out as a model is her daughter’s own doing.
“She grew up in the limelight but I tried to provide stability and a quieter world,” Basinger said.
“You just want them to follow their own path, and she totally did this on her own.”
