Charges dropped against alleged rape victim in Dubai

The British woman who was charged with having extra-marital sex in Dubai, after she reported being raped, had her charges dropped on Tuesday.

Zara-Jayne Moisey was on holiday when she went to police to report being violently raped by two British men in the city last month.

But Ms Moisey had her passport seized and was told to remain in the country, with her alleged attackers also reportedly detained.

Ms Moisey's father flew to the United Arab Emirates earlier this week to be by his daughter's side, telling UK media he was "scared" of what the outcome would be.

In good news for the 25-year-old, the Dubai Public Prosecutor's office dismissed the charges after finding the sex was "consensual".

“A thorough review of statements given by the British woman and the two suspects as well as the reports of investigating officers from Dubai Police, showed that the act happened with the consent of the three parties in question,” the public prosecutor’s office said in a statement.

“A video obtained from the mobile phone of one of the suspects detailing the act was a key evidence that supported this conclusion.”

Ms Moisey's father said his daughter had stopped in Dubai on her "holiday of a lifetime" in Australia following her marriage breakdown.

It remains unclear if the Brit will continue on with her Aussie travel plans, or if she will return home to the UK.
