Police were called to a serious crash in Puhoi late Friday afternoon, but it didn't involve your typical road vehicle.
A 62-year-old man had left the nearby pub on his 'motorised bar stool; a go-kart with a barstool on top for the drivers seat.
But it's not a laughing matter, the man wasn't wearing a helmet and fell onto the road sustaining serious head injuries.
At the time of the accident the man was reportedly driving the vehicle on the road, and no other vehicles were involved.
The man was airlifted to Auckland Hospital by a Westpac Rescue Chopper.
Police say the vehicle wasn't road-legal and it's been seized for mechanical examination.
The Serious Crash Unit is investigating.
"Whether alcohol was involved will be part of our investigation. The vehicle was not road-legal and we've seized it so it can be mechanically examined," said Inspector Mark Fergus, Road Policing Manager, Waitemata Police.
"An investigation is also underway into who actually owns the mechanical bar stool," he said.
